Estonia’s largest data center targets nearly €200M investment for AI expansion

Greenergy Data Centers is on track for nearly €200M in total investment as its Hüüru facility expands to serve AI computing and international customers.

Estonia is on track to add compute capacity for the upcoming AI adoption rise. Greenergy Data Centers is on track for nearly €200 million in total investment by the end of 2026 as Estonia’s largest data center expands its capacity for artificial intelligence computing and international customers. More than €70 million has already been invested in the facility in Hüüru, Harju County, with close to €100 million in funding from Estonian entrepreneurs, writes ERR News.

Investment directed to AI infrastructure

The additional capital will be used to develop space inside the existing building and add IT capacity. The main part of the investment is focused on technological upgrades that will allow AI computing infrastructure to be installed at the site.

“Since artificial intelligence inherently requires somewhat different infrastructure than what was already there, we are directing it towards enabling AI computing capacity to be installed in the building,” said Miko Niinemäe, head of Tensor Estate, which owns the data center.

The facility has primarily served Estonian customers to date. The expansion is intended to support the arrival of international customers as Greenergy Data Centers develops its role in the regional AI infrastructure market.

Estonian capital supports a larger facility

Among the investors backing the project are Kristjan Rahu, Jüri Käo, Enn Kunila, Markus Villig and Urvo Männama. The investment is being made through companies connected to the data center’s ownership and operating structure.

Urvo Männama, partner at Tensor Aurora, said the infrastructure supporting AI development was becoming increasingly important worldwide. Estonia has so far had limited large-scale data center capacity, he said.

The project is based at Greenergy Data Centers, a facility developed to serve growing demand for secure and energy-efficient data infrastructure in Estonia and the wider region.

Martin Rungi, head of the key accounts segment at Greenergy Data Centers, said the company was developing additional space inside the existing building rather than relying only on a new-build site. The investment will therefore combine expansion of the facility with the installation of new computing systems.

The investment comes as data center operators and technology companies across Europe expand capacity for AI workloads, which require more power, cooling and specialised infrastructure than conventional computing services.
