The town of about 3,100 inhabitants is known for its a pulp mill, operated by AS Estonian Cell, a cement factory and a port. Kunda became an important industrial center already in the second half of the 19th century as the cement factory was founded.
The surroundings of Kunda also possess cultural and historic importance as evidence of some of the oldest prehistoric communities in Estonia have been found here, of hunting and fishing communities that existed around 6500 BC.
