The hinterland of Pärnu port is Pärnu, Viljandi, Tartu, Põlva, Võru and Valga counties, as well as Lääne and Järva counties. In the hinterland, a significant part of the raw material resources exported through Estonian ports (up to 45% of the forest resource and up to 65% of the peat resource) and the processing industry are located.
In winter, Pärnu Bay is usually frozen. The average length of the ice period is two to three months, and an icebreaker is needed to keep the port open. AS Pärnu Sadam takes care of ice breaking in the water area of the port. Ice breaking on the public waterway entering the port is the responsibility of the Transportation Authority.
