Estonia is a hotbed for DefenceTech innovations, and the allies are ready to adopt those technologies in rapid fashion. This week, NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) selected three Estonian companies for its 2026 accelerator programme. Previous batches also saw strong participation from Estonian innovators.

  • C2Grid provides AI-enhanced 3D situational awareness by transforming video footage into interactive, multi-layered visual intelligence. This technology enables rapid situational assessment crucial for defence operations, converting standard video into comprehensive tactical overviews.
  • Spacedrip offers deployable wastewater treatment and water reuse solutions designed for rapid deployment with remote monitoring capabilities. This dual-use technology addresses both military field operations and civilian applications in resource-constrained environments.
  • LSMedical develops precision-engineered magnets using rare-earth-free technology. By eliminating dependence on rare earth materials—often sourced from geopolitically sensitive regions—the company offers superior performance while enhancing supply chain security.

Estonia’s growing role

Estonia will host 12 companies in total at its accelerator site, including the three Estonian participants and nine international teams. Four of these projects focus on maritime technologies. This is not a surprise, given Estonia’s strategic position in the Baltic region and its expertise in this sector. Lake NATO, as the sea is now dubbed, is a polygon for new solutions.

“Estonia’s success in the NATO DIANA accelerator demonstrates the strength and forward-looking nature of our technology sector,” said Erkki Keldo, Estonia’s Minister of Economy and Industry.

Each participating company receives €100,000 in initial funding, with top performers eligible for up to €300,000 additional funding in the second phase. Beyond financial support, teams gain access to over 200 test centres across NATO member states, specialised mentorship networks, and connections between defence and business sectors.

The accelerator focuses on ten critical technology areas, including energy and power, advanced communications, autonomous systems, maritime operations, space resilience, and data-assisted decision-making—all fields where dual-use applications benefit both civilian and military users.

With 16 accelerator sites now operating across NATO member states, the programme received 3,680 applications this year, selecting only 150 companies.
