Backed by leading Nordic and European investors byFounders, Norrsken Evolve, and Superangel, along with a €700 000 grant, Spiral Hydrogen has announced a €2.7-million round of pre-seed funding.
This capital will allow the young Estonian-Dutch startup to move from the lab to pilot deployment. Partnering with SwitcH2, specialists in offshore ammonia solutions, Spiral Hydrogen is building its first centrifugal bubble-free electrolyser system in the Port of Rotterdam.
What are bubble-free electrolysers and what does that mean for decarbonisation?
Conventional electrolysers lose up to 30% of input energy because of gas bubbles forming on the electrodes, blocking active reaction sites. Spiral Hydrogen’s patent-pending architecture eliminates bubble formation: gases route directly through hydrophobic porous electrodes into dedicated dry gas channels.
The result is drastically improved efficiency, at over 90 percent. Adding to this several other technological advances, costs are lowered dramatically, making green hydrogen cheaper than fossil alternatives for the first time. This, in turn, can finally allow the hydrogen economy to decarbonise profitably.
