It is the administrative centre of Saaremaa Parish and the capital of Saare County in West Estonia.
Kuressaare is the westernmost town in Estonia, known for its medieval episcopal castle and thriving tourism industry, boosted by the arrival of cruise tourists via the Saaremaa Harbour.
The town is served by Kuressaare Airport, located 3 km from the town. To reach the mainland, road transportation can be used as well, encompassing a ferry connection between Kuivastu and Virtsu.
As the island of Saaremaa has strong seamanship traditions and small craft building companies, Estonia’s only vocational school teaching boat builders, Kuressaare Regional Traning Center is located in Kuressaare. Kuressaare also boasts an industrial park, providing opportunities in manufacturing and production, and a harbour offering cargo as well as passenger services.
