Tallinn Airport posts record traffic numbers, connecting Estonia to main business hubs

Small country, big achievements: Tallinn Airport just hit an all-time record with 3.5M passengers in 2024.

Want to know if a region means business? Look at its airports. The more flights connecting a city to the world, the better its chances of attracting investment and talent. For Estonia, the numbers tell a promising story.

Recently, Tallinn Airport was awarded the title of the best airport in Europe for the sixth year in a row. Now it scores another win, handling 3.5M passengers in 2024, an 18% increase from 2023, as air traffic in the Baltic region continues to expand. The figure, over 2.5 times the population of Estonia, marks the highest passenger count in the airport’s history.

Tallinn maintained connections to 60 destinations, with routes to regional business centres driving much of the growth. Stockholm captured 10.1% of regular traffic, while Riga, Helsinki, and Frankfurt each commanded roughly 9.5% of passenger flow.

Latvia’s airBaltic dominates the market with a 26.6% share of passengers, followed by Ryanair at 18%. Traditional carriers Lufthansa and Finnair hold smaller but significant positions at 10.2% and 8.7% respectively. Flight movements increased 11% to 42,403 in 2024, averaging 116 daily operations. Fifteen airlines now operate regular services from Tallinn, serving both European hubs and point-to-point destinations.

As connectivity improves, so do tourism numbers. Estonia experienced a notable uptick in tourism at the end of 2024, with accommodation establishments hosting 119,000 foreign tourists in November, marking a 15% increase compared to 2023, and catching up to pre-pandemic records.
