Estonia’s future is connected to the rise of the smart industry, and the companies operating locally share that commitment.
According to a recent press release, ABB Estonia invested a record €8.58 million in 2024, marking the company’s largest annual commitment to its local operations. The investment centres on two major projects: building ABB’s global wind turbine service centre and expanding facilities to manufacture ultra-large synchronous stators up to 50 MW at its Jüri technology campus.
According to Signe Nurms, Chairman of the Board at ABB AS, the financial results reflect the company’s position at the centre of major expansion projects. “Since 2023, we have significantly increased our investment volume, and our operational effectiveness is confirmed by stable financial results,” Nurms explained.
Last year, ABB Estonia demonstrated improved efficiency, with a net profit margin rising to 5.3%. The order volume also shows a positive growth trend, opening doors to new investments. ABB Estonia plays a significant role within the global ABB group, with two major projects currently underway: the construction of ABB’s global wind turbine service centre in Jüri and the expansion of facilities for manufacturing ultra-large synchronous stators at the local motors and generators factory.
“These developments significantly expand our scope of operations and strengthen our presence in Estonia,” Nurms emphasised. “The record investments demonstrate the ABB group’s confidence in Estonian competence and production capabilities.”
Reaching new horizons
The success of ABB Estonia’s expansion strategy was proved in early 2025 when the company completed a groundbreaking pilot project – the AMZ2500 stator prototype. This represents a ten-fold increase in size and power compared to previously manufactured stators and marks the first time such a large stator has been fully wound at the Jüri facility.
According to Argo Aavik, Head of ABB Estonia’s Motors and Generators Business Unit, the AMZ2500 stator is the largest diameter and shaft height synchronous stator in ABB’s portfolio, with output power reaching up to 50 MW. “This project represents a significant advancement in both technological capability and quality, which has been our priority from the beginning,” Aavik explained.
The scale is remarkable. While ABB Estonia’s factory previously produced motors up to 5MW capacity, it now has the capability to manufacture motors up to 60MW. To put this in perspective, the main propulsion electric motors of Tallink Group’s shuttle vessels, Megastar and MyStar, have a power output of 20MW each.
To accommodate the production of larger stators, ABB Estonia has made substantial facility improvements at the Jüri plant. Two furnaces have been built higher, the working area has been expanded, and an additional resin container has been installed for storing larger quantities of resin. Simultaneously, the next pilot project, the AMZ2000 stator, is beginning its winding process, which will be the first stator completed entirely from start to finish in Jüri.
ABB has been operating in Estonia since 1992, with activities spanning four main areas: sales (products, equipment, systems), manufacturing (motors, generators, frequency converters), maintenance services (equipment, systems), and business services (personnel, customer service, and other services for ABB Group companies).
Over more than 30 years of operations in Estonia, ABB has received the “Foreign Investor of the Year” award from Invest Estonia five times, as well as a special Outstanding Foreign Investment Award last year.
