How Estonia made a splash in the heart of NYC with “Tales from the Land of Unicorns”

Here's how The "Tales from the Land of Unicorns” event brought together Estonian entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors in New York City to showcase best practices, share knowledge, and explore collaboration opportunities

The Estonian business world gathered in New York City on April 14th to showcase their best practices, share experiences and explore collaboration opportunities. The event, titled “Tales from the Land of Unicorns,” was held in the heart of the Big Apple and was organized by the Consulate General of Estonia in New York, the Estonian Embassy in Washington, and TRINITI Law Firm, in partnership with Trade Estonia and Invest Estonia.

From Estonia to the Big Apple

“Tales from the Land of Unicorns” provided a unique opportunity to learn from each other and share their best practices. The impressive lineup included entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors, who brought their knowledge and expertise to the table. The gathering was attended by 80 people, including representatives from more than a dozen startups.

 

Martin Rand, co-founder and CEO of Pactum, and Timmu Tõke, from ReadyPlayerMe, shared their inspiring founder stories, highlighting the network effect among the Estonian startup community and the ease of growing a business there.

The event also featured passionate keynote speeches by Sandra Särav, Deputy Secretary General for Business and Consumer Environment at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of Estonia. She spoke about e-Estonia and the country’s approach to tackling past, present, and future challenges. Other notable speeches included words from Elizabeth Kiehner, Chief Growth Officer at Nortal, and Hanna Triin Sipos, CEO of Bikeep.

 

Pitching was also at the core of the action with Planet42, LaavaTech, SkySelect, Beamline Accelerator, Clevon, Reconeyez and Solid World presenting their ideas in addition to those mentioned above.

Besides the informative sessions, the event included a networking and afterparty, where attendees enjoyed the performance of Stefan, Estonia’s Pop Artist of 2023, and Estonian representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

The event was hosted by Airi Hämmalov, M&A and Private Equity Partner at Baker McKenzie, who provided a perfect venue for the event, and the organizers expressed their gratitude to her and the team.
