Stargate Hydrogen, a Tallinn-based electrolyser manufacturer, has secured an investment from Repsol, Spain’s largest integrated energy company. The deal, announced this week, sees Repsol’s Corporate Venture arm acquire a minority stake (3,6%) in the company.

For the Estonian new energy sector, this is a groundbreaking deal. Repsol is Spain’s largest hydrogen producer and consumer, while Stargate specialises in next-generation alkaline electrolysers: the equipment that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity.

Stargate’s technology stands out through its use of advanced ceramic catalyst materials and innovative stack design, which the company claims offers significant cost advantages over competing solutions.

The Repsol investment builds on Stargate’s strong momentum in 2025. Earlier this year, the company completed an €11 million Series A funding round and opened a new manufacturing facility. The company currently has a production capacity of 140 MW per year, which can be scaled to over 1 GW with additional investment.

Stargate has already secured customers across Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, and India, including major names like Fortum, Utilitas, and ABB. The company is also one of the few electrolyser manufacturers recognised under the EU’s IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) program, highlighting its strategic importance to European energy goals.

Both Stargate and Repsol share one common goal: dramatically reducing renewable hydrogen production costs for heavy industries, sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals that are difficult to electrify directly. Repsol plans to reach 600-700 MW of installed hydrogen capacity by 2030.
