Tartu-based Better Medicine uses artificial intelligence to give overworked radiologists a powerful ally in the fight against kidney cancer. The MedTech startup just closed a €1M pre-seed round led by Soulmates Ventures, bringing their total funding to nearly €6M when combined with grants from the European Innovation Council and other sources.
Since 2020, Better Medicine is battling one of the most acute problems in the modern healthcare industry. Radiologists worldwide are drowning in scans. In the UK alone, there are only 10 radiologists per 100,000 people, and half of all radiology positions remain unfilled. Meanwhile, an ageing population means more imaging demands than ever before.
The result? Delays, missed diagnoses, and burned-out doctors are spending an estimated 12 million hours annually on repetitive manual measurements.
“Imagine a second set of eyes, but multiplied by 1000, always alert and never tired,” explains CEO Priit Salumaa. “We’re making early cancer detection easy and freeing doctors to focus on what truly requires their judgment.”
Their solution? AI that actually works. Better Medicine’s BMVision platform integrates directly into existing radiology workflows, detecting and measuring kidney lesions automatically. The results:
- 96% standalone accuracy in clinical studies
- 99.2% detection rate when combined with radiologist review
- 52% time savings reported by users
The company just passed an important milestone: CE certification as Europe’s first AI-based kidney cancer detection tool compliant with strict EU medical device regulations.
The new funding will fuel expansion across Europe and prepare for FDA approval in the United States. Better Medicine is already running clinical pilots with major hospitals, including Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Tartu University Hospital. Later, the company plans to expand beyond kidney cancer to other organs and metastatic sites.
