Estonia’s public transport might be calm and reliable (and free for Tallinn’s residents), but it’s also powered by an intrepid spirit of innovation. This month, the sector is making waves internationally, with two leading companies securing major wins.
Ridango attracts strategic investment
Tallinn-based Ridango, a provider of public transportation software, has received an investment from London-based Bregal Milestone. While the financial details were not disclosed, the company plans to use the funds to accelerate its growth.
Ridango’s reach is already impressive. Founded in 2009 by CEO Erki Lipre, the company has built integrated automated fare collection and operations control software platforms that serve over 150 customers across 25 countries on five continents. Its solutions provide end-to-end transit management services, from account-based ticketing to real-time passenger information and automatic vehicle location.
Following increased customer activity in Sweden, Ridango is establishing new European headquarters there while maintaining R&D hubs in Estonia and Slovenia. The company is also expanding its presence in the Middle East (UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia) and Asia-Pacific regions (Singapore and Hong Kong).
Turnit wins prestigious global award
Meanwhile, Estonian travel technology company Turnit has been recognised with the Ticketing Technology of the Year award at the Transport Ticketing Global event, a major international competition.
This is another win for the Nordic cooperation. Turnit’s award-winning multimodal ticketing solution, Turnit Hub, was developed in collaboration with Sweden’s Samtrafiken, a collaboration and development company that unites public and private transport operators. The solution facilitates the sale of integrated public transport tickets worth over 2 billion SEK annually and is used by more than 40 passenger transport companies.
“This is a major recognition for our entire team,” said Turnit CEO Ülo Säre. “The fact that an Estonian company’s innovation is being acknowledged at this level proves that world-class technology can be created even in a small country like Estonia.”
